President Donald Trump has announced a major initiative to transform Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia. Speaking to his Cabinet members at the White House, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the airport, stating, 'We're also going to rebuild Dulles airport because it's not a good airport. It should be a great airport, and it's not a good airport at all. It's a terrible airport.'
Dulles, one of the three major airports serving the Washington, D.C., area, has long been a subject of debate among locals. Trump, a former real estate developer, attributed the airport's shortcomings to its design, saying, 'The Dulles building is good, but it was incorrectly designed.' Despite his criticism, Trump praised the work of Eero Saarinen, the Finnish-American architect responsible for the main terminal.
'We're going to turn that around and we're going to make Dulles airport -- serving Washington and Virginia, Maryland, etc. -- we're gonna make that into something really spectacular. We have an amazing plan for it,' Trump proclaimed. His personal visit to the airport in early November, during which he took an unannounced drive through the terminal, was seen as a strategic move to assess potential future projects.
The Transportation Secretary, Sean Duffy, further elaborated on the administration's plans. He announced that the department is seeking bids to repair the 'people movers' or 'mobile lounges' at Dulles, which had a recent accident in November. This initiative aims to enhance the overall travel experience and safety at the airport.
