Van Rootselaar's descent into violent online content coincided with growing mental health concerns at home. Police had responded to mental health calls at Van Rootselaar's residence over several years, and the shooter had been apprehended under the Mental Health Act on multiple occasions.
The shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School claimed six lives, most of them under 13 years old. Van Rootselaar's own 11-year-old brother and mother were also found dead.
