Tecno Camon 50 Ultra Review: A Camera Setup That's Not All It's Cracked Up to Be

The GSMArena Team, 3rd March 2026

4.0

The Tecno Camon 50 Ultra's camera setup is a mixed bag, with competent performance in daylight and decent low-light capabilities, but it's not without its flaws.

Daylight Performance

In broad daylight, the Camon 50 Ultra's main camera takes very good photos with great dynamic range, accurate white balance, and vibrant colors. Human subjects look great, with well-judged exposures and lively skin tones. However, the 50MP shots exhibit heavy sharpening, and there's no extra detail beneath the surface.

Telephoto Camera

The telephoto camera, while capable of decent results, can be a bit hit-or-miss. It struggles with outdoor daylight scenes, often resulting in blurry images with a watercolor-like effect. Close-up attempts are not impressive, and human subjects don't fare much better.

Ultrawide Camera

The ultrawide camera is a bit of a downgrade, with soft and grainy low-light photos. It's decent in daylight, but the contrast can be a bit too high, and shadows may appear soft and grainy.

Selfies

Selfies are where the Camon 50 Ultra shines. The selfie camera delivers excellent detail and lively colors, with great skin tones and autofocus for odd angles. It's a solid piece of kit, and the wider 20mm lens is a welcome improvement over the 24mm optics of the 40 Premier.

Low-Light Performance

In low-light conditions, the main camera remains poised and captures very good photos with plenty of detail. The 2x zoom level provides usable results, but detail can be soft and aggressively sharpened. The telephoto camera's 3x photos are not top-class, with mushy and desaturated darker scenes and coarse detail in better-lit areas.

Video Quality

The Camon 50 Ultra's video recording capabilities are adequate, with 4K30 video available on the wide and telephoto cameras and 1080p60 on the selfie camera. The ultrawide camera maxes out at 1440p30. Stabilization is good, but the ultrawide's footage can be soft and noisy, and the telephoto's clips are harsh with highlights and noisy in shadows.

Verdict

The Camon 50 Ultra's camera system is somewhat mismatched, with a competent main camera, decent selfies, and a telephoto that's better on paper than in practice. The ultrawide camera is a bit of a downgrade, but it's not a deal-breaker. Overall, it's a solid camera, but it's not without its flaws.
