Interestingly, when asked about deporting long-term residents with no criminal record, support for deportations drops to 44%, with 56% opposed.
ICE's Conduct and Deportations
Among those who favor deportations, opinions are divided on ICE's conduct. About a third (35%) disapprove of ICE's enforcement of immigration, while 65% approve. However, those who oppose deportations are almost unanimously opposed to ICE, with 96% disapproving and only 4% approving.
Perceptions of Deportees
When it comes to the criminal records of deportees, public opinion varies. 52% believe the U.S. is mostly deporting immigrants with no criminal record, while 47% say most deportations are of people with criminal records. Republicans are more likely to believe that most deportees have criminal records (83%), while independents (57%) and Democrats (86%) are more likely to believe the opposite.
Approval of Trump's Immigration Handling
President Trump's approval rating on immigration stands at 44%, with 56% disapproving. This represents a decline from November, when 45% approved and 55% disapproved. The net approval rating on this issue has dropped to -12 percentage points since May.
