UCI World Cup Namur: Lucinda Brand's Dominance Continues as Puck Pieterse Finishes Fourth in Cyclocross Return
Lucinda Brand (https://www.cyclingnews.com/riders/lucinda-brand/) (Baloise-Glowi Lions) showcased her prowess in the challenging terrain of Namur, winning the fourth round of the UCI World Cup with ease.
Brand took the lead during the first lap and maintained her position, finishing 43 seconds ahead of World Cup leader Aniek van Alphen (https://www.cyclingnews.com/riders/aniek-van-alphen/) (Seven Racing). Amandine Fouquenet (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) secured an impressive third place, just one minute behind Brand, after taking an early lead on the opening lap.
Namur, renowned for its demanding climbs, technical descents, and banked straights, witnessed a display of exceptional skill from Brand, who has dominated the cyclocross season so far.
Inge van der Heijden (Crelan Corendon), the previous day's winner in Kortrijk (https://www.cyclingnews.com/category/womens-cycling/exact-cross-kortrijk-european-champion-inge-can-der-heijden-dominates-to-claim-third-victory-of-the-season/), started strongly but was swiftly passed by Fouquenet, who excelled on the steep climb at the start of the lap. Célia Gery was in hot pursuit, aiming for a French 1-2 in the early stages.
Brand, aware of the competition, took the initiative and surged to the front before the end of the first lap, establishing a significant lead over Fouquenet and a chasing group that included Pieterse, Van Alphen, and Van der Heijden.
By the third lap, Brand had further extended her lead, with Pieterse showing signs of fatigue. Van Alphen, however, moved past the Dutch champion into second place, trailing Brand by 28 seconds.
During the fourth lap, Brand encountered a puncture with only a few hundred meters to the pits, where she could swap her Trek for a fresh one. She lost around 10 seconds but maintained a 19-second gap over Van Alphen, heading into a technical descent followed by another cobbled climb.
The relentless climbing in Namur often determines the race's outcome, favoring riders with exceptional stamina. Brand, known for her strength, demonstrated her ability to power through the toughest sections. Pieterse, in contrast, paid for her early efforts as Fouquenet passed her into third place.
As the race progressed, Brand maintained her lead, extending it to over 30 seconds by the penultimate lap. She continued to showcase her dominance over the iconic cyclocross course, ultimately securing another resounding victory on the final lap.
