Imagine an audition so electric, so charged with unspoken desire, that one actor felt like he was about to be, well, ravaged by his co-star. That's the story behind the casting of 'Heated Rivalry,' the new Crave/HBO Max series setting the hockey world – and viewers' hearts – ablaze.
The buzz around 'Heated Rivalry' (available on Crave in Canada and HBO Max in the US) isn't just about the on-screen action. It's the palpable chemistry between its stars, Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, that's got everyone talking. Jacob Tierney, the show's creator and the mastermind behind this LGBTQ+ sports romance, revealed just how instant that connection was.
Tierney shared that Williams and Storrie clicked almost immediately during their auditions. In fact, Williams was so struck by Storrie's intensity that he told Tierney, point-blank, that Storrie seemed like he was ready to "pin me down and f*ck me." A bold statement, right? But here's where it gets controversial... Did that raw, unfiltered energy translate into authentic on-screen chemistry, or is it just a case of aggressive acting?
Storrie, who plays Ilya Rozanov, a Russian-American hockey player for the Boston Raiders, remembers the audition vividly. "Hudson was the third actor that I read with," he told Out Magazine. "The first two I was like, ‘Okay, this is cool,’ and then Hudson came on. Jacob actually texted me directly and was like, ‘What do you think?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, Hudson, for sure.’ Instantly."
Williams, who stars as Shane Hollander, a Montreal Metros pro from Ottawa, echoed that sentiment. "I read with one other possible Ilya, and it was good. But something about Connor… There was an inexplicable X-factor that just felt realer than what I thought it could possibly be. And that was something. I had a quote I told Jacob, at one point, about my read with Connor in particular." And this is the part most people miss... It wasn't just about physical attraction; it was about a connection that transcended the script, a shared understanding of the characters' complex emotions.
Tierney elaborated on Williams' candid assessment: "Hudson told me, ‘The other guy was good, but Connor felt like he was going to pin me down and f*ck me.’ … That is literally what he said. And I was like, ‘Well, I think I cast this right.'" He emphasized the importance of finding the right dynamic between the two leads. "They were essentially cast at the same time. It was very clear to us that we needed to find Shane and Ilya together," Tierney explained. "This show lives and dies with them, so we needed to make sure that this worked together. There are terrific actors who are in, you know… They’re just in different shows. You need to find the people who are going to be together in the same show, and that’s what the two of them had quite instantly."
'Heated Rivalry,' created by Tierney and Brendan Brady from Accent Aigu Entertainment and adapted from Rachel Reid’s novels, dives into the secret love affair between two rival hockey stars. Away from the ice, Shane and Ilya navigate a confusing and complicated relationship they initially keep hidden from the world. But is this secrecy born out of fear, or a genuine desire to protect their careers? François Arnaud, Robbie GK, Sophie Nélisse, Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, Dylan Walsh and Christina Chang round out the talented cast.
