France and US Military Satellites Perform Joint Maneuvers in Space (2026)

A new era of space cooperation is dawning! French and American military satellites have recently engaged in joint maneuvers, a significant step forward in their combined space war plan. This collaboration, announced by France's Space Command, showcases a growing partnership in the realm of space defense.

"This is a great demonstration of our ability to respond and maneuver jointly in orbit," a translated version of the French statement highlighted. These exercises are part of US Space Command’s Multinational Force-Operation Olympic Defender, which aims to deter potential adversaries. But here's where it gets interesting: these maneuvers, known as Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPOs), involve satellites getting up close and personal.

RPOs involve two satellites maneuvering closely around each other. They're like a high-stakes dance in space and can serve various military purposes. These can range from inspection and refueling to repairs or even, potentially, actions against enemy satellites.

France's participation in these operations alongside the US is a clear signal of its commitment to safeguarding its space interests. A US SPACECOM spokesperson confirmed this bilateral operation to Breaking Defense, emphasizing the coalition's ability to plan and execute dynamic space operations. This also shows a commitment to defending shared interests in space.

It's worth noting that while this was the second joint RPO with the US, it was the first planned under Olympic Defender. France joined the American-led space warplanning scheme last October. The first joint RPO took place concurrently but was planned separately as a bilateral exercise, according to USSPACECOM. A Space Force officer even received a French military medal for his involvement.

Currently, six allied nations are involved in Olympic Defender: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

The UK is the only other nation to have conducted a joint RPO with the US. This took place in September. While the specific satellites involved in these operations haven't been officially disclosed, the private space tracking firm COMSPOC provided some insights. For the UK maneuvers, a US Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) satellite, USA 271, got within 13 kilometers (8.1 miles) of the UK’s SKYNET 5A military communications satellite.

COMSPOC also observed the Franco-American exercise, which involved another GSSAP satellite, USA 324, and France’s SYRACUSE 3A. These satellites conducted three sets of maneuvers in November, with the closest approach being about 25.1 kilometers (15.6 miles). The maneuvers suggest that SYRACUSE 3A appeared to lead, with USA 324 following.

And this is the part most people miss: During a conference in September, a senior Space Force official mentioned that USSPACECOM is discussing similar operations with other Olympic Defender partners. This shows a growing commitment to international collaboration in space. The USSPACECOM spokesperson added that refining common tactics through combined operations is vital for the multinational force's growth.

This raises some interesting questions: What do you think about the increasing militarization of space? Do you believe these joint operations enhance global security, or do they potentially escalate tensions? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
