VAAN Awards Recognize the Achievements of Extraordinary Women
The Victorian Afghan Associations Network (VAAN) recently celebrated the remarkable achievements of eight exceptional women from the Hazara and Afghan communities. The selection process was highly competitive, with 75 nominations received, each highlighting the diverse talents and contributions of these women. Among the recipients were a flight instructor, a Taekwondo champion, and medical students who have founded or supported organizations dedicated to helping the less fortunate.
One of the awardees, Fatima Mozaffari, a Medicine PhD student at Monash University, founded Faraj Academics, a non-profit organization that provides academic support to hundreds of young Afghan and Hazara students who have recently arrived in the country. Mozaffari's passion for education and her commitment to empowering girls in her homeland are truly inspiring.
"Faraj Academics was born out of a deep belief that dreams deserve to be nurtured and that educating one girl can transform the future of her family, community, and country," Mozaffari shared. "Our mission is to build a hybrid model of online and in-person education, connecting mentors worldwide with girls in Afghanistan, often facing immense personal risks. It's not about charity; it's about building partnerships and fostering connections."
The organization's work extends beyond academic support. All proceeds from tutoring VCE students are directed towards supporting disadvantaged communities in Afghanistan. Mozaffari's medical training took her to Uganda and Nepal, where she witnessed the positive impact of education even in the midst of extreme poverty. This experience further fueled her determination to address the stark contrast in her homeland, where girls' education is banned.
Faraj Academics emerged from the heartache caused by deadly attacks on educational centers, such as the Kaaj Educational Centre. These incidents reopened old wounds for many in the Afghan diaspora, reminding them of the sacrifices made by parents to ensure their children could grow up in peace. Mozaffari emphasizes, "Faraj Academics was founded in honor of those sacrifices and in response to the painful question: what can be done when you have no power, no platform, and no protection, only conviction?"
The Faraj Academics team, consisting of 15 tutors, also provides career counseling alongside their non-profit work. What began as an online initiative has grown into a thriving community, supporting over 200 students with free academic support, mentorship, career guidance, and VCE guidance.
The VAAN awards ceremony was a momentous occasion, attended by esteemed guests such as Dr. Sima Samar, a renowned doctor, humanitarian, and advocate for girls' education. Rohullah Nikpai, Afghanistan's first and only Olympic medallist, and Dr. Homira Rezai from the UK were also present, adding to the significance of the event.
VAAN Vice-President Zabi Mazoori emphasized the fair and balanced selection process, involving both internal and external committees to ensure a diverse and credible selection. "All eight awardees are exceptional role models and contributors to our Victorian Afghan community," Mazoori stated. "Our goal was to honor Dr. Sima Samar and celebrate the achievements of these remarkable women in our southeast community. We carefully chose a committee of credible and distinguished individuals to ensure a fair and balanced selection process. Their input was invaluable."
The VAAN awards ceremony not only recognized the achievements of these women but also highlighted the importance of education and empowerment in the Afghan community, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
