Imagine a raccoon, tipsy and disheveled, stumbling out of a liquor store after a night of mischief. Sounds like a hilarious cartoon, right? But this actually happened, and it’s sparked a nationwide frenzy. Meet the now-famous Ashland raccoon, a furry troublemaker who’s turned his drunken escapade into a viral sensation—and a surprising force for good.
In late November, this mischievous critter broke into an Ashland ABC store in Hanover County, Virginia, ransacked the shelves, and passed out in the bathroom after indulging in a little too much alcohol. The story quickly went viral, capturing hearts and imaginations across the country. It inspired everything from Virginia ABC advertisements and themed cocktail recipes to a massive scavenger hunt and even a pet election.
But here’s where it gets even more fascinating: this wasn’t the raccoon’s first rodeo. During an episode of Hanover County’s podcast Hear In Hanover, Animal Protection Officer Samantha Martin revealed that this furry bandit is a serial offender. “This is not the first time he’s been in one of the buildings,” Martin shared. Apparently, the raccoon had previously broken into a karate studio and even the DMV, where he helped himself to some snacks.
And this is the part most people miss: the raccoon’s antics have raised over $200,000 for the Hanover County Animal Protection Shelter through a limited-time merchandise campaign. T-shirts, hoodies, and other items featuring the “Trashed Panda” have flown off the shelves, all for a good cause.
But why return the raccoon to the scene of his crimes? Martin explained that relocating raccoons is often a death sentence, so they released him back into the area surrounding the strip mall. “He’s a smart little critter,” she said, acknowledging his knack for breaking in.
The story has taken on a life of its own, even making its way onto Saturday Night Live. Martin admitted she never expected the photos she posted to go viral, let alone become a national phenomenon. “I think people can see the human side of it,” she said. “Everybody’s had a few extra and passed out by the toilet, hoping someone can help you the next morning.”
The funds raised will help the shelter, which is in desperate need of upgrades. “Our shelter is extremely old,” Martin explained. “We need more kennel space, a bigger well—we just need a bigger shelter for the size of the county.”
But here’s the controversial question: Should we celebrate the raccoon’s antics, or should we be concerned about the potential risks of wild animals breaking into human spaces? While the story is undeniably funny, it raises important questions about wildlife management and public safety.
As the “Trashed Panda” merchandise campaign wraps up, the impact of this furry outlaw will last far beyond his drunken night. If you’re inspired by his story, consider adopting a pet during the “Clear the Shelter Christmas Open House” on December 20. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find your own mischievous companion—just keep the liquor locked up!
