Claude the Albino Alligator Dies: Remembering a San Francisco Icon (2025)

Bold truth: even legendary creatures can fall victim to the fragility of life, and Claude the albino alligator’s passing reminds us that rarity carries a heavy responsibility. Claude, a globally cherished figure, died on Tuesday at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. He lived to 30 years old.

The Golden Gate Park science museum is a magnet for Bay Area students and visitors from around the world. Over the years, many children left with a Claude-themed souvenir, and the reptile became an unofficial emblem of the museum and the city. Claude even appeared in a children’s book and in advertisements at bus and light-rail stations.

The museum described Claude as possessing a “quiet charisma” that captured hearts during his 17 years in San Francisco. They also note that fewer than 200 albino alligators exist worldwide.

Claude demonstrated how ambassador animals can bridge people with nature and spark a desire to learn about the world. He hatched in 1995 at an alligator farm in Louisiana and arrived at the Academy in 2008. Albinism is a genetic mutation that left him with a white appearance, and his eyes appeared pinkish-red due to visible blood vessels through clear irises.

Albino alligators rarely survive in the wild, though American alligators can live up to 70 years in captivity. The museum marked Claude’s 30th birthday in September with celebrations, speeches, and a special birthday cake made from fish and ice.

Claude measured about 10 feet (3 meters) in length and weighed around 300 pounds (136 kilograms). Recently, he underwent treatment for a suspected infection after showing a reduced appetite. The University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine will examine Claude to determine a possible cause of death.

A public memorial is planned. In the meantime, the museum invites people to share memories of Claude and to send messages to his dedicated care team at the California Academy of Sciences.
