The tour promises to be a nostalgic journey through ANGEL's illustrious career, with a highly anticipated stop at the legendary Whisky A Go Go in West Hollywood, California, scheduled for August 7th. This iconic venue, steeped in rock and roll history, is the perfect setting for ANGEL to bid adieu to their devoted fans. For those unfamiliar with the Whisky A Go Go, it's a place where countless rock legends have graced the stage, making it an especially poignant location for this farewell performance.
But beyond the excitement of a final tour, a stark reality underlies ANGEL's decision. Less than a year ago, Frank DiMino candidly described the drastically changed touring landscape in an interview with the Edwardsville Intelligencer. He noted that the band now faces challenges vastly different from their early days of arena-sized shows.
"We have to do stuff now [to prepare for shows]," DiMino explained. "We used to do all these big shows with our road crew and there were things we didn’t have to worry about, but now we have only two guys working for us. We used to take a soundman with us, and we don't have that luxury anymore, and now that's done by the people who are at whatever venue we're playing. We also must make sure that all our equipment is running right for the soundchecks and our crew used to do that before we stepped on stage. It's not a bad thing; it's just different than what it was."
This quote highlights the financial pressures and logistical hurdles that many bands face in today's music industry. It's a far cry from the days of massive road crews and dedicated sound engineers. Bands now often have to take on more responsibilities themselves, making touring a more demanding and less glamorous endeavor.
Adding another layer of reflection, DiMino shared his thoughts on ANGEL's 50th anniversary in a separate interview with Metal-Rules.com. "It is unbelievable," he said. "When I think back on it, and when someone first said, 'Well, it's the 50th anniversary,' I said, 'What are you talking about?' You know, it's kind of crazy when I think about it. I look back and go, 'Really?' Sometimes it feels like it was just yesterday, and other times it seems like such a long time ago."
He continued, "But yeah, it's fun to celebrate that first album. We had such great energy in the beginning when the five of us first got together and played. I think everyone felt the same thing. Back then, we were very young, playing with a lot of different people, and there was a little scene in D.C., in Georgetown, where bands would go see other bands in different clubs. So, for the five of us to come together and form one band was pretty exciting. And from the first chord we played together, I think we all felt that this was something we could really build and turn into something special." This profound reflection of DiMino highlights the band's humble beginnings and the raw energy that fueled their initial success.
Beyond DiMino and Meadows, the current ANGEL lineup features Danny Farrow on rhythm guitar, Charlie Calv on keyboards, and Billy Orrico on drums, all of whom have been integral to the band since 2018. Discovered by none other than KISS bassist Gene Simmons, ANGEL was signed to Casablanca Records, the same label as KISS. Their self-titled debut album in 1975 leaned more towards progressive rock, while later albums like "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" (1977) and "Sinful" (1979) embraced a more glam-pop sound. Before disbanding in 1981, ANGEL released five studio albums and one live album, leaving behind a legacy of memorable music. The band officially reformed in 2019 with original members Punky Meadows and Frank DiMino, releasing their comeback album, "Risen", that October, followed by "Once Upon A Time" in 2023. This resurgence proved that the magic of ANGEL was still alive and well.

ANGEL's discovery by Gene Simmons of KISS is a testament to Simmons's keen eye for talent. Signed to Casablanca Records in 1975, ANGEL released six albums (five studio, one live) between 1975 and 1980, blending glam, hard rock, and melodic singalongs.
While ANGEL never reached the same level of commercial success as KISS, they cultivated a dedicated following with tracks like "Rock & Rollers", "Tower", "The Winter Song", and "20th Century Foxes", which famously appeared on the soundtrack of the Jodie Foster film "Foxes". The original lineup of Punky Meadows, Mickie Jones, Frank DiMino, Gregg Giuffria, and Barry Brandt recorded two more albums, "Helluva Band" (1976) and "On Earth As It Is In Heaven" (1977), before Jones was replaced by Felix Robinson on bass. Two more studio albums, "White Hot" (1978) and "Sinful" (1979), followed, along with the live album "Live Without A Net" (1980).
Unfortunately, ANGEL's momentum began to wane in the early 1980s after Casablanca Records withdrew their support due to disappointing album sales. In 1981, Robinson and DiMino departed to pursue other projects. Meadows and Giuffria attempted to keep ANGEL afloat, even coming close to securing a record deal with CBS, but ultimately, the band disbanded. This marked the end of an era for ANGEL, but their music continued to resonate with fans.
In 2018, Caroline/UMe celebrated ANGEL's legacy with "Angel: The Casablanca Years", a seven-CD box set featuring the band's six albums released on Casablanca Records, along with a seventh disc of mono mixes, single edits, soundtrack contributions, and rarities. The box set included liner notes by ANGEL expert Dave Reynolds, along with rare photos and memorabilia. This comprehensive collection served as a testament to ANGEL's enduring influence on rock music.
